GET OUT ON ONE OF THE BEST HIKES IN THE AREA!
The Billy Goat Trail is a CHALLENGING TRAIL along rugged terrain with rock scrambling along and atop cliffs that overlook the Potomac River as it pours through a gorge.
If you are not in good hiking condition, do not have a good sense of balance, or are afraid of heights or narrow places, you may not want to attempt this trail. Children over the age of 10 are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Sturdy, close-toed shoes are a must. We’ll provide water and a light snack.
This section of the Billy Goat Trail is by far the most demanding—but extremely rewarding for those who complete it. You’ll scramble and climb over angled rocks and boulders while taking in views of the frothy Potomac as it squeezes through Mather Gorge. The 1.7 mile trail turns into a 3.7 mile loop as we will start along the more leisurely C&O Canal towpath. Total hiking time: 2.5-3 hours. Transportation will leave the hotel at 1:00pm.
Jeff Scharf (TACS) will be the hike leader.
HIKE IS SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION FOR WEATHER OR HIGH RIVER LEVELS.
